Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has opened an investigation into the Hazelwood School District following a brutal attack on a teenage girl by another student. The investigation will focus on how the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programs contributed to the safety failures that led to the violent incident. Despite Bailey’s efforts, the school district has refused to comply with the investigation. A spokesperson for the district criticized Bailey’s investigation, claiming it was full of inaccuracies and questioning his integrity.

The Hazelwood School District spokesperson claimed that the fight did not occur during school hours but rather after school hours, off school property. They argued that the presence of school resource officers within the school building would not have prevented the fight from occurring outside of school property. The spokesperson also pointed out other fights in the area that did not receive press coverage and questioned Bailey’s assumptions about the racial dynamics of the incident. Bailey expressed concern that the school district prioritized divisive racial ideology over the safety of its students.

In response to the school district’s criticism, Bailey clarified that the investigation sought to uncover facts surrounding the incident and determine whether the school violated Missouri’s Human Rights Act. He emphasized that the focus should be on complying with the investigation rather than attacking character. The school district acknowledged receipt of a Sunshine Law request and promised to provide requested records by April 15. Bailey stressed the importance of following Missouri law and providing the requested documents in a timely manner.

The investigation is ongoing, and Bailey is determined to uncover the truth surrounding the incident that left 16-year-old Kaylee in critical condition. A GoFundMe page has provided updates on Kaylee’s condition, reporting that she is now breathing on her own, out of the ICU, and in stable condition. Bailey’s investigation seeks to hold the school district accountable for any violations of the Human Rights Act and ensure the safety of all students within the district. The response from the school district raises questions about transparency and accountability within the educational system. Bailey’s commitment to upholding the rights of all Missouri residents highlights the importance of addressing issues of discrimination and ensuring the full enjoyment of public accommodations.
