Margot Robbie and her company LuckyChap, along with partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara, are producing a live-action feature film based on the popular board game Monopoly. Lionsgate extended its development rights to the Monopoly board game following its purchase of eOne in December 2023. Hasbro Entertainment, the backers of Monopoly, will also be involved in the production. Monopoly is considered the world’s most popular board game brand, with a 99% global awareness and has sold nearly half a billion copies since it was first introduced in 1935.

It remains unclear how the producers plan to create a narrative story from the two-dimensional world of Monopoly, including how they will portray the game’s mascot, Rich Uncle Pennybags. However, following the success of their previous project, “Barbie,” which became the highest-grossing movie of 2023 with $1.4 billion globally, it’s no surprise Lionsgate chose them for this challenge. During a CinemaCon announcement, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson expressed confidence in LuckyChap’s ability to bring a fresh perspective to the Monopoly movie, which received enthusiastic support from the audience.

LuckyChap has been in high demand following the success of “Barbie” and recently backed the Sundance film “My Old Ass” which sold to Amazon MGM Studios for $15 million. Their upcoming projects include Wilde’s new Christmas comedy “Naughty” for Universal Pictures. The company expressed excitement about working on the Monopoly movie, calling it a top property. Hasbro Entertainment’s head of film, Zev Foreman, also noted that Monopoly’s status as one of the most iconic games in the world presents unique storytelling opportunities, and they are thrilled to collaborate with LuckyChap and Lionsgate on bringing it to the big screen.

With a clear point of view on the Monopoly movie, LuckyChap and Lionsgate aim to create a blockbuster film that appeals to fans of the game across the globe. The project is expected to leverage the historic popularity and enduring legacy of Monopoly to craft an engaging and entertaining cinematic experience. James Myers is overseeing the development of the film on behalf of the studio, with Robert Melnik leading the dealmaking. The collaboration between LuckyChap, Lionsgate, and Hasbro Entertainment promises to bring a fresh perspective and innovative storytelling approach to the beloved board game.

As production moves forward on the Monopoly movie, fans can anticipate a creative interpretation of the classic game that captures the essence of its gameplay while also introducing new elements to enhance the storytelling experience. The involvement of LuckyChap, known for their thoughtful and carefully curated projects, along with the resources and expertise of Lionsgate and Hasbro Entertainment, sets the stage for a compelling and successful adaptation of this iconic brand.
