Luis A. Miranda Jr., a Democratic political strategist and father of “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, experienced a heart attack in 2017 that led him to reflect on his life and write his memoir, “Relentless: My Story of the Latino Spirit That is Transforming America.” The memoir recounts his journey from a young activist in Puerto Rico to becoming a prominent Latino Democratic political adviser and philanthropist in the United States. Miranda’s efforts to raise money for Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and his political evolution are highlighted in the book.

Miranda grew up in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, and moved to New York City in 1974 with the intention of pursuing a Ph.D. in political sociology. However, he ended up living his life based on managed impulse, following what he believed was right and aligning his head and heart before taking action. He realized his purpose in life was political early on, and his activism led him to become a key figure in Latino advocacy and politics in New York City and beyond.

After working for nonprofit organizations, Miranda joined City Hall in the 1980s under Mayor Ed Koch, where he headed the Office of Hispanic Affairs. He later became the founding president of the Hispanic Federation, a leading Latino advocacy group in the country. Miranda’s contributions to Latino politics and activism, including his work with various political campaigns, have made a significant impact and helped shape the Latino political landscape in the United States.

Miranda’s focus on engaging Latino voters and not taking them for granted has been a key aspect of his political strategy. He believes that Latino voters are persuadable Democrats who should be approached with respect and without assumptions. Miranda’s work has led to significant political victories, including helping elect the first Dominican American to Congress and the first African American woman to citywide office in New York City.

Despite being known primarily as “Lin-Manuel’s dad,” Miranda embraces this role and sees it as a testament to the success of the next generation surpassing his own. The success of “Hamilton” has provided the Miranda family with a platform to support causes they believe in and give back to their community. Lin-Manuel has credited his father as an inspiration for the musical, drawing parallels between his father’s journey and that of Alexander Hamilton, who also arrived in New York from the Caribbean.

Miranda’s love for music and musicals, particularly “The Sound of Music,” has played a significant role in his life and has been passed down to his children. His relentless spirit and dedication to his work, family, and community shine through in his memoir, showcasing the impact of Latino activism and leadership in shaping America’s political landscape. Ultimately, Miranda’s story is a testament to the power of the Latino spirit transforming America and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
