On April 12, 2024, residents of Viry-Châtillon, France, gathered for a white march in memory of Shemseddine, a 15-year-old who was fatally beaten near his school. The march brought together hundreds of people who walked through the streets of the town to pay tribute to the young boy. Shemseddine’s mother expressed gratitude for the solidarity and support shown by the community during the march, describing her son as funny, generous, and radiant. The mayor of Viry-Châtillon, Jean-Marie Vilain, also participated in the march, along with around 2,000 individuals, according to the municipality.

At the conclusion of the march, white balloons and birds were released as a symbolic gesture in honor of Shemseddine. Many attendees, including Céline-Hélène Drapier and her 7-year-old son, came to show their respect, while her 15-year-old son, a friend of Shemseddine who attends the same school, couldn’t bring himself to attend. The community hopes for a greater awareness among young people about what is acceptable behavior and what is not, in the wake of this tragic incident that has left many feeling shaken and saddened.

Attendees at the march expressed their sorrow over the loss of Shemseddine, fondly remembering him as a bright and cheerful presence. Many highlighted their concerns about the normalization of violence among young people, with some wearing T-shirts bearing the message “Rest in peace Shemseddine.” Catia Dos Santos, a mother of two, joined the march to support Shemseddine’s family, pointing out that her own son was classmates with the victim and has been deeply affected by the recent events. She emphasized the need to address the issue of violence and prevent such tragedies from occurring again in the future.

Shemseddine was laid to rest in a neighboring town, Morsang-sur-Orge, following his tragic death. Four individuals, three of whom are minors and one adult, have been charged with murder after Shemseddine was fatally beaten as a result of a dispute related to the sister of two of the suspects. All four individuals have been placed in provisional detention as the investigation proceeds. According to initial findings and statements from the suspects, the brothers had warned several boys to stop contacting their sister about sexual matters, fearing damage to her reputation and that of their family. The 15-year-old sister has also been charged with knowingly allowing the crime to occur.

This tragic incident in Viry-Châtillon has sparked a wave of emotions within the community, as residents come together to mourn the loss of Shemseddine and call for a halt to violence among young people. The march served as a moment of remembrance and reflection on the impact of senseless acts of violence on families and communities. As the investigation continues and legal proceedings unfold, there is a collective hope for justice to be served and for measures to be implemented to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The memory of Shemseddine continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him, as they strive to honor his legacy and advocate for a safer and more compassionate society.
