Chinese electric vehicle makers are making a strong presence at the Bangkok International Motor Show, showcasing their latest models, including a flying car. Companies like BYD, XPeng, and Great Wall Motors are gaining momentum in Thailand, challenging traditional market leaders like Toyota, Isuzu, and Ford. Thailand, being one of the biggest markets in Southeast Asia, has prioritized the development of its EV market. BYD, a leading Chinese EV maker, displayed a wide range of its EV lineup, including the Dolphin and Seal models, with impressive driving ranges and competitive pricing.

BYD sold 30,650 EVs in Thailand last year, followed by Neta, a brand of Hozon Auto, which sold 12,777 units. Tesla, British brand MG, and Chinese car maker Great Wall Motor also made their mark on the market. VinFast, a Vietnamese newcomer, is planning to expand its EV sales to 50 countries by the end of the year. Neta has announced plans to start assembling EVs in Thailand, and Great Wall Motor has acquired a former General Motors plant for its expansion into Southeast Asia.

Thailand’s EV market accounted for just 0.5% of global EV sales but led in Southeast Asia with nearly 60% of sales in 2022. The country is already an auto manufacturing hub, with a thriving market for pickups and a diverse range of vehicle models on the roads. The Bangkok International Motor Show featured a variety of automakers from different countries showcasing their products. Thailand’s welcoming policy for all automakers to invest and sell their products was evident in the diverse displays at the show.

Thailand is rapidly expanding its network of charging stations to accommodate EVs, although most vehicles on the roads still run on gasoline, diesel, or LPG. XPeng, a Chinese start-up entering the Thai market with high-tech EVs, showcased its flying concept car, the XPeng AeroHT Voyager X2. While the flying car is not licensed to fly in Thailand, XPeng sees it as a vision for future mobility beyond traditional vehicles. The company aims to target the premium segment with its innovative products and is confident in its ability to compete in the market.

The future of mobility in Thailand and globally is evolving, with a shift towards electric and advanced technology vehicles. The presence of Chinese EV makers and other international brands at the Bangkok International Motor Show reflects the growing interest and competition in the market. Thailand’s commitment to expanding its EV market and infrastructure, coupled with the entry of new players like XPeng and VinFast, signals a dynamic and competitive landscape for the automotive industry in the country. The show’s opening to the public showcased a range of innovative and cutting-edge vehicles, highlighting the ongoing evolution and diversification of the automotive market in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
