A 41-year-old man from Cangas del Narcea (Asturias) died on Wednesday as a result of an explosion that occurred inside one of the booths of a well-known pyrotechnic company in the municipality. The workplace accident took place at the facilities of the Pirotecnia Pablo firm in the town of Vallinas and was reported at 9:15 am to the Complex Operations Center of the Asturias Command of the Civil Guard, according to Europa Press. The worker was preparing gunpowder for use in pyrotechnics at the time of the explosion. Security forces, including Gedex, Weapons Intervention, and Judicial Police, have been deployed to the scene. The blast occurred in one of the separate booths typically used by these companies for handling explosive substances that are later used in fireworks and rockets. The booth was completely destroyed. While initially it was thought there might be more casualties, only one death has been confirmed and no other personal injuries have been reported.

The company where the accident occurred has a long tradition in the locality and is one of the most important in Asturias. The council of Cangas del Narcea, with just over 12,000 inhabitants and located in the southwestern part of Asturias, has a strong pyrotechnic tradition marked by the traditional “Descarga” festival. Every July 16th, on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, over a ton of gunpowder is ignited through blasting and the launching of around 80,000 fireworks in less than 10 minutes, as reported by the Efe agency.
