The Green Party in Saxony-Anhalt is pushing for a more comprehensive confrontation with the AfD at their state party conference. They are calling for the establishment of a nationwide task force that would continuously gather information from the intelligence services and civil society about the AfD and its members’ anti-constitutional activities, and evaluate this information for the potential of a ban. The aim is to collect solid evidence of the party’s anti-constitutional behavior to assess the prospects for a ban or withdrawal of party financing.

The Greens, who have around 1300 members in the state, also want to focus on public servants in this context. They are demanding the removal of any public servant engaged in anti-constitutional activities and propose consolidating the responsibility for disciplinary proceedings in the state administration for more effective enforcement. The party is gearing up for the municipal elections on June 9, with a record number of almost 500 candidates, of which 40.5 percent are women. Their goal is to have a strong presence in all city councils and district councils. The Greens are advocating for live broadcasts and digital accessibility of committee meetings in all municipal parliaments.

In recent polls for the upcoming 2026 state parliamentary elections, the Alliance Greens in Saxony-Anhalt are currently at five percent, while the AfD is at 29 percent, the CDU at 32 percent, and the SPD at 8 percent. The FDP would not reach the parliamentary threshold with four percent. The Greens are striving to become the strongest force in Halle and Magdeburg. The party hopes to secure three seats in the district council, with the overall goal of entering all city councils and district councils in parliamentary strength, according to State Chairman Dennis Helmich.

The Green Party’s call for a nationwide task force to evaluate the possibility of banning the AfD comes as part of their efforts to prepare for the municipal elections and confront the rise of the far-right party in Saxony-Anhalt. They emphasize the need for concrete evidence of the AfD’s anti-constitutional activities to legally assess the feasibility of a ban or financial penalty. Additionally, the party is focusing on promoting gender equality in their candidate selection process and advocating for greater transparency in municipal governance through live broadcasts of committee meetings.

With an eye on the upcoming 2026 state parliamentary elections, the Green Party in Saxony-Anhalt is gearing up for a strong performance, aiming to secure a significant presence in municipal councils and become the leading force in Halle and Magdeburg. They are determined to increase their influence and address the challenges posed by the AfD, as they continue to push for a thorough investigation into the party’s anti-constitutional activities and potential legal consequences. The party’s emphasis on transparency and accountability in local governance reflects their commitment to promoting democratic values and advancing gender equality in political representation.
