President Zelensky of Ukraine stated in an interview with CBS News that the liberation of Ukraine’s territories currently occupied by Russia could push President Vladimir Putin to negotiate. Zelensky believes that once Russian troops retreat, Putin’s support within his country will be shaken, making negotiations possible without exclusively relying on military means. Despite failed peace talks in the early stages of the war, Ukraine is adamant about the necessity of a complete military withdrawal before engaging in negotiations. Zelensky has expressed willingness to negotiate only if Putin is no longer in power, as he believes this will weaken Putin’s confidence and support within his country, making him more open to dialogue.

Ukraine has proposed a 10-step peace formula for negotiations with Russia, emphasizing the need for a full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. The formula also includes prosecuting those responsible for war crimes, preventing ecocide in Ukraine, and ensuring energy and food security as well as nuclear safety. However, Russia has consistently rejected these proposals and has refused to attend the upcoming peace summit in Switzerland, regardless of any invitation. Over 160 countries are expected to participate in discussions surrounding Ukraine’s peace formula and the restoration of the country’s sovereignty.

While Ukraine faces an increasingly precarious situation in the war, with military officials warning of a potential new major attack by Russia, President Zelensky has stated that the situation on the battlefield has stabilized compared to previous months. However, he has not ruled out the possibility of a significant Russian offensive at the end of May or in June. The military build-up of Russian troops, estimated at 100,000, raises concerns about a potential escalation of hostilities in the region. As Ukraine prepares for possible further attacks, international support and solidarity remain crucial in defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia enters its third year, the mood among supporters of Ukraine may be waning. Various factors, including unsuccessful counteroffensives, leadership changes within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and the ongoing devastation caused by the conflict, contribute to concerns about Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russian aggression. Despite these challenges, maintaining a steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence and sovereignty is essential. Defeatism and pessimism must be countered with resilience and determination, as history will ultimately judge those who stood in solidarity with Ukraine during its time of need. It is crucial to continue advocating for peace, justice, and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.
