In October 2023, 39-year-old Jessy Kurczewski went on trial for the intentional homicide of Lynn Hernan in a Wisconsin courtroom. Kurczewski, who had been taking care of Hernan, was also charged with two counts of felony theft for stealing from her. Prosecutors alleged that Kurczewski was motivated by money and stole over $144,000 from Hernan while she was still alive, in addition to attempting to inherit money from her estate after her death.

The prosecution presented evidence that Kurczewski had given Hernan a bottle of Visine laced with tetrahydrozoline, causing her death. They argued that Kurczewski’s motive for killing Hernan was financial gain. On the other hand, the defense portrayed Kurczewski as a caring friend who was looking after Hernan as her health declined. They suggested that Hernan may have taken her own life due to her health problems.

Witnesses, including friends of Hernan and medical professionals, testified to Hernan’s declining health and struggles before her death. The prosecution presented forensic evidence of the presence of tetrahydrozoline in Hernan’s system as the cause of her death, while the defense brought in experts to argue that the death may have been due to mixed-drug toxicity, resulting from Hernan’s various medications.

Ultimately, the jury found Kurczewski guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of felony theft. Before sentencing, a bizarre turn of events occurred when an envelope containing handwritten documents attempting to fake evidence was received by authorities. Kurczewski denied writing the documents, but prosecutors claimed it was proof of her guilt. Kurczewski was sentenced to life in prison for the homicide charge and 10 years for the theft charges.

Throughout the trial, Kurczewski maintained her innocence, insisting that she did not murder Hernan or steal from her. Despite her claims, the evidence presented by the prosecution led to her conviction. The case showcased the complex layers of relationships and motivations involved in a murder trial, shedding light on the devastating impact of greed and deceit on the lives of those involved.
