German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently announced that European Union leaders are planning to provide Ukraine with seven additional Patriot air-defense systems in response to Russia’s ongoing bombardment of the country. The Patriot system, considered one of the most effective air-defense systems globally, has been successful in intercepting Russia’s hypersonic missiles. Germany has been a leading provider of aid to Ukraine during the conflict that Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated in February 2022. In addition to the Patriots, Germany is set to deliver more IRIS-T and Skynex air defense systems as part of their aid package to Kyiv. Ukraine is also awaiting the outcome of a $61 billion aid package from the U.S., which is expected to be voted on by Congress soon. President Joe Biden has urged Congress to pass the aid package swiftly as a show of support for Ukraine and other allies.
Scholz has called on Western nations to expedite the process of getting key weapons such as the Patriot systems to Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of time in the current situation.
