Two teenagers were charged following a viral video showing them on a boat dumping trash into the waters off the coast of Florida during a spring break-like event. The video captured the teenagers speeding into the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and throwing bins of empty bottles and garbage into the water, leaving a trail of trash behind. The footage went viral online and sparked backlash, leading to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission charging two teens with causing pollution to harm human health or welfare, animal, plant, aquatic life, or property. The two individuals responsible for throwing the waste were identified as a 15-year-old from Gulfstream and a 16-year-old from Boynton Beach, according to reports.

Boca Bash, the annual event where the incident occurred, is not connected to the city of Boca Raton and falls under the jurisdiction of the state, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission being the lead agency. Despite 20 arrests during the event, including 17 for boating under the influence, there were no major incidents or boating accidents. The trash dump incident became the most discussed incident from the event after a viral video was released showing the teenagers dumping garbage into the ocean. FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto called it a “worldwide story” and emphasized the need for it to be a teaching moment for everyone involved.

The garbage dump was part of an annual spring break-like event in Boca Raton that started in 2007 and has since attracted thousands of partygoers to Lake Boca Raton in Palm Beach County. The event, known as Boca Bash, has gained a following on social media with about 13,000 followers on Instagram. Pictures and videos show revelers hopping from boat to boat, dancing in the water, using water trampolines, and consuming alcohol. FWC Col. Brian Smith emphasized the need to send a message that Florida does not tolerate such behavior and that environmental protection is crucial.

The FWC conducted an investigation into the incident, looking up the boat’s registration and visiting the address of the owner, where they were met by the 15-year-old’s father. The father expressed that the actions were not a representation of their family and requested to meet with legal counsel present. The FWC stressed the importance of protecting the environment and sending a message that such actions will not be tolerated in Florida. The incident has served as a wake-up call for those involved and highlighted the need to respect and preserve the environment.

The viral video sparked controversy and backlash, leading to charges being filed against the two teenagers responsible for dumping trash into the ocean during the Boca Bash event. The incident, which gained international attention, prompted discussions about environmental conservation and the consequences of irresponsible behavior. FWC Chairman Barreto emphasized the need for the incident to be a learning experience for all involved and to set a precedent for future events. The annual event, known for attracting thousands of partygoers, has come under scrutiny following the trash dumping incident, serving as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior and environmental stewardship.
