In various cities across France, including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Montpellier, thousands of people gathered to protest against transphobia and the current attacks on the rights of transgender individuals. Participants chanted slogans in support of anti-patriarchy, anti-capitalism, and solidarity with transgender individuals worldwide. The protests aimed to highlight the urgent need to defend the rights of all individuals in the face of misinformation and attacks from right-wing and far-right politicians.

The mobilization was organized by over 800 collectives and prominent individuals, including political parties like France Insoumise and the Socialist Party. The call to action was issued in response to a report on the identity of minors by a group in the Senate, which has led to a proposed law that will be discussed in late May. This report, along with the promotion of a book titled “Transmania” and a proposed law to protect minors from certain medical and surgical practices related to gender transitions, has been criticized as promoting discrimination and reactionary ideas.

The release and promotion of the book “Transmania” has faced backlash, leading to the removal of advertising posters by the operator JCDecaux. The city of Paris deemed the content of the posters contrary to its ethical guidelines. An upcoming conference featuring the authors of the book, who deny any transphobia in their work, has sparked controversy and calls for censorship. Despite calls to cancel the event, the university hosting the conference has defended it as a platform for debate and freedom of expression.

The protests also condemned the resurgence of discriminatory rhetoric and practices targeting transgender individuals reminiscent of past anti-LGBTQ movements. Activists and organizations have called attention to the importance of countering such harmful narratives and ensuring the protection of transgender rights. The manifestation drew attention to the daily challenges faced by transgender individuals and the urgency of defending their rights in a hostile environment fueled by misinformation and discrimination.

The demonstrations emphasized the need for unity and solidarity in the face of the current climate of backlash against transgender rights. Despite facing resistance and provocations during their peaceful protests, participants remained steadfast in their commitment to advocating for equality and respect for all individuals, regardless of gender identity. The widespread support for the protests and the involvement of various groups and individuals reflect a growing awareness of the importance of standing up against transphobia and discrimination in society.
