The iconic Haiku Staircase in Hawaii, also known as the “Stairway to Heaven,” is set to be demolished at the end of the month by the Honolulu City Government. The decision to tear down the landmark was made in 2021 and reflects the city’s commitment to addressing the longstanding issue of trespassing on the site. Despite repeated warnings and fines for trespassers, people continued to access the landmark, leading to the decision to demolish it.
The Haiku Staircase, which consists of 3,922 steps along a mountain range in Kaneohe, was originally built by the US Navy during World War II. Due to vandalism and littering, the landmark was closed in 1987. Trespassers are currently subject to a $1,000 fine for accessing the staircase, but this did not deter daredevils, sightseers, and social media influencers from climbing the stairs and sharing their experiences online. The ongoing issue of trespassing ultimately led to the decision to demolish the staircase.
Council members cited concerns about the financial and safety risks posed by trespassing on the Haiku Stairs, as well as the impact on local communities. Mayor Rick Blangiardi emphasized the city’s respect for the land, the community, and the cultural history of the Haiku area in explaining the decision to demolish the staircase. The demolition process is expected to take at least six months and will cost $2.5 million.
In response to the imminent demolition of the Haiku Staircase, officials are advising the public to stay away from the area to avoid potential safety hazards. Any remaining stairway modules pose a risk to trespassers, and preparations for the demolition are already underway. While the decision to demolish the beloved landmark may be disappointing for many hikers and visitors, it underscores the importance of respecting local regulations and preserving the natural environment. Despite its iconic status, the Haiku Staircase will soon be a thing of the past, and hikers in Hawaii will need to find alternative ways to experience the breathtaking views once offered by the legendary landmark.
