Anna Wintour decided to make the theme of the annual Met Gala centered around wealthy individuals fending off mobs of plebians, which seemed tone-deaf given the current climate of protests against the government and anger towards the rich. The event attracted celebrities, billionaires, and social media personalities, who struggled with the dress code of “The Garden of Time.” Many attendees opted for generic floral motifs, missing the deeper meaning of J.G. Ballard’s tale that inspired the theme.

Ballard’s 1962 short story features a couple of aristocrats using magical time flowers to protect their palace from rabble. The irony of this story was lost on the attendees, as an actual mob of anti-Israel protestors gathered outside the venue as the glamorous event unfolded inside. The disconnect between the luxurious setting of the gala and the real-world issues brewing outside was stark, showcasing the self-righteousness of some of the attendees who failed to live up to their proclaimed revolutionary ideals.

Rev. Al Sharpton called for a ceasefire between the protestors and the gala-goers before heading inside where tables started at $350,000. The mishmash of interpretations of Ballard’s story from the critics and Vogue’s own take on it led to confusion about the Gala’s intended message. The juxtaposition of high society elites with the stars of the Gala raised questions about whether such extravagance was reflective of maintaining culture or simply a display of wealth and opulence.

The appearance of TikTok as the chief sponsor of the Met Gala further highlighted the generational divide and the changing landscape of social media influences. Despite the event’s financial contributions to the museum, the Gala itself failed to entertain or provide any meaningful engagement. The focus on superficial floral motifs and lack of deeper engagement with Ballard’s story made the event feel trivial and out of touch with the current social and political climate.

The disconnect between the Met Gala attendees and the average person watching the event from home highlighted the growing divide between the elite and the general public. The lackluster response to this year’s Gala and the increasing boredom with the self-absorbed spectacle showcased how the event was failing to resonate with a broader audience. The focus on superficial elements and the lack of introspection or deeper engagement with meaningful themes left many feeling disconnected and disinterested in the spectacle.
