A recent study published in the JAMA Network Open suggests that consuming at least half a tablespoon of olive oil per day may reduce the risk of dementia-related death. The study found that higher intake of olive oil was associated with a lower risk of dementia-related mortality, regardless of diet quality. Researchers used data from two large prospective cohorts in the United States, with a total of 92,383 participants. Those who consumed more than 7 grams of olive oil daily had significantly lower dementia-related mortality rates compared to those who consumed less.

The study, which included a 28-year follow-up, revealed that individuals who consumed at least 7 grams of olive oil daily had a 28% lower risk of dementia-related death. Substituting margarine and mayonnaise with olive oil was linked to a reduced risk as well. Other vegetable oils or butter did not provide the same benefits. The researchers concluded that, in US adults, higher olive oil intake was associated with a lower risk of dementia-related mortality, regardless of diet quality. Olive oil consumption is believed to have positive effects on brain health due to its monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, and polyphenols.

Registered dietitians not involved in the study emphasized the importance of incorporating olive oil into a healthy diet. They noted that olive oil is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help protect cells and blood vessels in the brain. In addition to lowering the risk of dementia-related mortality, olive oil consumption has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and respiratory disease mortality. Experts recommend using olive oil for cooking and meal prep rather than relying on supplements, as the benefits are maximized by incorporating it into a well-rounded diet.

While the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between olive oil consumption and lower dementia-related mortality, the findings support the idea that olive oil offers a range of health benefits. In addition to its impact on brain health, olive oil is known to have positive effects on overall health and longevity. Experts advise incorporating olive oil into daily cooking habits and meal preparation to reap the full benefits. While olive oil supplements are available, experts suggest focusing on whole food sources to ensure that all the nutrients and health benefits are obtained naturally through the diet. Ultimately, a varied approach to cooking oils, with an emphasis on unsaturated fats like olive oil, can help support optimal health and well-being.
