The controversy surrounding high school teacher Ian Golash in Seattle began when he was suspended for making pro-Hamas comments, including justifying the terror attacks on Israel and questioning whether women were raped at a music festival in the Negev desert. The comments were brought to light by Accuracy in Media, a conservative group focused on exposing antisemitism on campuses. Golash’s statements led to his suspension and an investigation into the matter by the school district.

Despite the backlash, Golash released a statement clarifying that he does not support any killings and condemning any atrocities that took place during the October 7th attack. He claimed that he has been trying to navigate the information available about the event and differentiate fact from fiction. Golash argued that Palestinians are justified in resisting against Israel to support their liberation from what he called an apartheid state, but he hoped that resistance would be peaceful.

Golash’s father, Mike Golash, spoke out on Facebook, claiming his son has been placed on paid administrative leave for speaking out against genocide in Gaza. He also accused Zionists of attacking his son and violating his First Amendment rights. Despite the controversy, the Seattle School District stated that it does not tolerate antisemitic, Islamophobic, or any type of hate speech in its schools or offices. The district has initiated an investigation into the situation but cannot comment on personnel matters during the review process.

The suspension of Golash comes after a previous incident involving the teacher allegedly berating a student for describing himself as “straight.” The student’s mother claimed that the teacher found the term offensive and denied her son the right to identify himself as straight. Golash defended his position by saying that he prefers not to use the term “straight” because it could have a negative connotation. The mother chose to remove her child from Golash’s class following the incident.

Seattle Public Schools stated that they are committed to fostering inclusive environments that encourage the exploration of contemporary issues. The district has a formal process for resolving student complaints and citizen concerns about employee actions, particularly those related to discrimination, harassment, or bullying. The district aims to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all students while also addressing any issues of discrimination or inappropriate behavior among staff members.
