The Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported that Russian forces attacked ten border areas and settlements in Sumy Oblast on April 28, firing 35 times and causing at least 127 explosions. The communities targeted included Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, Shostka, and Novo Sloboda. No casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure were reported, despite the use of artillery fire, multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), FPV drones, mortar shelling, and mines. Velyka Pysarivka, situated on the Russia-Ukraine border, experienced the most attacks with 25 explosions recorded in the area. Residents in Sumy Oblast have been facing daily threats of shelling, leading to large-scale evacuations from the region.

In addition to the attacks in Sumy Oblast, Russian troops also targeted the cities of Kupiansk and Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast on the same day, injuring two civilians. The escalation of violence in the region has raised concerns about the safety and security of residents in both Sumy and Kharkiv Oblasts. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in increased military activity along the border, leading to a heightened sense of fear and uncertainty among the population. The attacks serve as a reminder of the devastating impact of war on civilian populations and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The Russian military’s use of various weapons and tactics, including artillery fire, drones, and rocket systems, highlights the sophistication and strategic planning behind the attacks in Sumy and Kharkiv Oblasts. The deliberate targeting of border areas and settlements has created a sense of vulnerability among residents who are living under constant threat of violence. The lack of casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure in Sumy Oblast is a testament to the resilience and preparedness of the local authorities and residents in the face of ongoing conflict. However, the injuries sustained by civilians in Kharkiv Oblast underscore the need for heightened security measures and protection for vulnerable populations.

The intensity of the attacks in Sumy and Kharkiv Oblasts reflects the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as both sides continue to engage in military maneuvers and exchanges of fire along the border. The impact of the conflict on civilian populations, particularly in border areas, cannot be overstated, as families are forced to flee their homes in search of safety and security. The international community has a responsibility to condemn acts of aggression and support efforts to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine, in order to prevent further loss of life and displacement of civilians. The targeting of civilian areas and infrastructure violates international humanitarian law and must be met with strong condemnation and decisive action by the international community.
