Apple’s current iPad lineup is confusing and cluttered, with multiple models and generations to choose from. There are two sizes of iPad Pro, the iPad Air, two generations of the regular iPad, and the iPad Mini still in existence. It can be difficult to determine which Apple Pencil is compatible with each iPad, and only one iPad has the camera positioned for landscape FaceTime calls. Apple did not release any new iPads last year, the first time this had happened since the tablet was introduced in 2010. However, new iPad Pro and Air models are rumored to be coming soon, with expected updates in early May.

The iPad has always occupied a middle ground between Apple’s phones and laptops, but it now faces competition from the Vision Pro, a new device that CNET’s Scott Stein describes as “an iPad exploded into space.” While the Vision Pro is currently too expensive to compete with iPads, its price may come down in the future, leading to potential competition for third-screen needs and consumer dollars. As Apple prepares to release new iPads, consumers are eager to see which direction the company will take with its tablets. Rumored updates for each iPad line include OLED displays for the iPad Pro, a larger iPad Air, and potential processor upgrades for the entry-level iPad and iPad Mini.

The upcoming iPad Pro models are expected to feature OLED displays, offering more vibrant colors, true black levels, and superior contrast compared to the current mini-LED screens. These models will also include Apple’s M3 chip, USB-C, MagSafe wireless charging, and an updated Magic Keyboard with an aluminum cover and larger trackpad. The iPad Air is rumored to expand to a 12.9-inch size, giving consumers a larger screen option without the premium price of the Pro models. The new Airs are expected to feature M2 chips, LED-based liquid retina panels, and a new camera bump with flash.

While details are less clear for the entry-level iPad and iPad Mini updates, they may receive processor upgrades with the 11th-gen iPad moving to the A15 chip and the seventh-gen iPad Mini getting the A16 chip. The 10th-gen iPad is likely to remain the budget offering, with the ninth-gen model possibly being phased out. These updates are expected later in the year, along with the possibility of a foldable iPad finally making an appearance. As Apple continues to innovate and update its iPad lineup, consumers can expect new features and upgrades to enhance their tablet experience.
