Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed in a deposition from his 2012 divorce proceedings that a parasitic worm had eaten part of his brain before dying in his skull. He had been experiencing cognitive problems and feared he had a brain tumor, leading him to seek medical attention. Initially scheduled for surgery at the Duke University Medical Center, a second opinion revealed that the shadow in his brain scans was actually a dead parasite, likely a pork tapeworm larva. Kennedy stated that the worm had entered his brain, eaten part of it, and then died, causing his condition.

During the deposition, Kennedy mentioned having cognitive issues, short-term memory loss, and longer-term memory loss. Around the same time, he was also diagnosed with mercury poisoning, which a doctor believed was the true cause of his severe brain fog. The mercury poisoning was determined to have been caused by a heavy diet of fish, particularly tuna sandwiches. However, after making changes to his diet, RFK made a full recovery from the brain fog and other symptoms. He reported having no lasting effects from the parasite or the mercury poisoning.

When asked if his medical history put his mental ability into question, a spokeswoman for RFK’s campaign refuted the suggestion, stating that it was humorous given the competition. Kennedy has emphasized his physical fitness in comparison to President Biden and former President Trump, frequently sharing images of himself being active on social media, including at the gym. Despite his health challenges in the past, he has shown resilience and recovery.

RFK’s campaign clarified that he had no lingering effects from the parasite or the mercury poisoning and that he was able to overcome the cognitive issues he faced at the time. Kennedy’s focus on his physical fitness has been a notable aspect of his public image, contrasting with his political opponents. While his health history is unusual, it has not hindered his ability to lead or participate in physical activities, as evidenced by his active presence on social media. Moving forward, Kennedy is committed to maintaining his health and fitness as he pursues his political endeavors.
