If he had been found to have been taking drugs that would have ruined his case for a lesser sentence for the killings. And now it is claimed that Calocane had his hair cut which would have given an opportunity to take samples from it. Hair retains chemicals and so would have shown with Calocane was taking drugs at the time of the attack. A source told The Sun: “It’s incredible really, after all the failings and all the issues raised by the families, they have made a mistake so basic. “Hair samples could’ve been crucial for showing Calocane was under the influence of drugs at the time of the attacks. If that can be proved, it smashes his right to the lesser manslaughter plea and he is left facing the murder charges the families want him tried over.” Nottinghamshire Police reportedly said that Calocane did not have his hair cut in custody. The Mirror has contacted the force for comment. Sentencing Calocane at Nottingham Crown Court in January, judge Mr Justice Turner said the killer would be detained in a high-security hospital “very probably for the rest of your life”. He said: “You committed a series of atrocities in this city which ended the lives of three people in this city. Your sickening crimes both shocked the nation and wrecked the lives of your surviving victims and the families of them all.” Now Deanna Heer KC, representing the Attorney General’s Office, said there was no criticism of Mr Justice Turner’s conduct, but argued a “penal punishment” was needed due to the severity of Calocane’s crimes.
