Scrabble, a classic word game that has been popular for over 75 years, is receiving an update with the new version called Scrabble Together. This updated version is described as more collaborative and accessible, with a second side to the board that allows players to work together to complete goal cards instead of competing against each other. This is aimed at making the game more inclusive for players who may find word games intimidating, bringing people together in a new way through gameplay. The goal is to maintain the popularity of Scrabble and appeal to a wider audience.

Ray Adler, the Global Head of Games at the company, expressed the importance of ensuring that Scrabble remains inclusive for all players. The introduction of the Scrabble Together Mode provides an ideal option for those who may have felt intimidated by the classic version of the game or believed that word games were not for them. The new game mode is designed to cater to a trend among younger generations who prefer teamwork and collaboration over competitive games, working towards a common goal in a fun and engaging way. The aim is to create a more welcoming environment for all players, regardless of experience or skill level.

Research conducted by Mattel among British board gamers revealed that competitiveness is perceived as declining in younger generations. The survey showed that baby boomers are considered the most competitive group, followed by millennials and Gen-Z. This shift in preference towards collaboration and teamwork is reflected in the creation of Scrabble Together, which aligns with the desire of younger players to avoid highly competitive games. The game will be available across Europe, although it will not be released in the United States due to licensing restrictions.

The introduction of Scrabble Together marks the first major change to the traditional Scrabble board, offering a new way for players to engage with the game. While the board itself is being altered to accommodate the collaborative gameplay, Scrabble also regularly updates its official dictionary to include new words that have entered the English language over time. In 2022, over 500 new words were added to the seventh edition of the dictionary, reflecting the evolving nature of language. Words like “adorbs,” “dox,” and “zoodle” are now officially recognized in the Scrabble dictionary, ensuring that the game stays relevant and engaging for players of all ages.

The updated version of Scrabble aims to cater to a diverse audience and adapt to changing preferences among players, offering a new experience that emphasizes collaboration and teamwork. By introducing a more accessible and inclusive game mode, Scrabble Together provides an option for those who may have been hesitant to engage with word games in the past. This change reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry towards cooperative gameplay and shared experiences, appealing to a new generation of players who seek interaction and engagement in their gaming experiences. As Scrabble continues to evolve and stay current, it remains a beloved classic that brings people together through the power of words and friendly competition.
