The Republican National Committee has sent a letter to the Secret Service requesting that protesters be kept farther back from the upcoming July convention in Milwaukee. The RNC counsel Todd Steggerda expressed concerns about the safety risk posed by the city’s current proposal, which places demonstrators in close proximity to attendees. The letter also requests a meeting between Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and RNC leadership to address the safety issue.

The request from the RNC comes amidst heightened awareness around political protests, particularly as pro-Palestinian demonstrations take place at major universities across the US. Recent clashes on college campuses have led to detainments and arrests as tensions escalate between attendees and demonstrators with differing ideologies. The RNC is concerned that forced proximity could lead to verbal or physical clashes and increased law enforcement intervention.

In response, a spokesperson for the Secret Service stated that they have not formally received the letter but will respond through appropriate channels if it is received. The agency emphasized that the operational security plan for national special security events, including the 2024 Republican National Convention, is developed and approved through collaboration with various federal, state, and local agencies to ensure the highest level of safety and security for the convention.

The RNC’s letter criticizes the Secret Service’s security perimeter plan, which funnels large crowds through a park to access the convention site. The RNC suggests expanding the security perimeter farther east to alleviate concerns about forced proximity between attendees and demonstrators. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson had previously dismissed security concerns when the city was announced as the host for the convention in 2022, citing the preparedness of the police department.

Overall, the RNC’s request for increased distance between protesters and attendees at the upcoming convention reflects concerns about safety and security in light of recent political protests and confrontations. The ongoing dialogue between the RNC, Secret Service, and local authorities will be crucial in ensuring a smooth and secure event for all participants. The city of Milwaukee’s hosting of the convention will be under scrutiny to effectively manage potential security risks and maintain a peaceful environment for all involved.
