Support for legal abortion has reached a record high, with 66% of voters believing abortion should be legal in either all or most cases, according to a new Quinnipiac University survey. This increase in support comes as Democrats are making abortion rights a central issue in their 2024 campaigns. The survey also found that support for abortion in all cases reached a record high of 34%, while support for banning abortion in all cases dropped to an all-time low of 5%. These results are consistent with other surveys that show a significant increase in support for abortion over the past decade.

Another survey released by Bloomberg/Morning Consult indicates that voters are increasingly concerned about abortion rights in this year’s election. For the first time in the tracking poll’s history, more than half of voters in seven swing states say that the issue of abortion is very important to how they will vote. This suggests that abortion rights will be a significant factor in the upcoming elections, with voters in multiple states deciding whether to overturn restrictive abortion laws enacted in Republican-led states after the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

In Florida, voters will have the opportunity to enshrine the right to abortion into the state constitution, which would overturn the six-week abortion ban signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. Abortion rights supporters in Arizona have also gathered enough signatures to put a constitutional amendment before voters to protect the right to abortion in the state and reverse a Civil War-era abortion ban recently reimplemented by the state Supreme Court. However, the state legislature in Arizona may block the law from moving forward before voters have the chance to weigh in.

President Biden’s campaign has been focused on attacking former President Trump for his appointment of conservative Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Biden has promised to reinstate the federal right to abortion if elected to another term. On the other hand, Republicans have struggled to develop a cohesive messaging strategy on the issue, which party leaders attribute to losses in key Senate and House races in the 2022 midterm election. Many Republicans, including Trump, have shifted their stance on abortion, calling for policies to be decided at the state level.

As the debate over abortion rights intensifies, the upcoming elections will play a crucial role in shaping the future of abortion laws in the United States. Voters will have the opportunity to have their voices heard on this issue in several states, with Florida and Arizona taking center stage in the fight for reproductive rights. The outcome of these elections could have far-reaching implications for the future of abortion rights and access in the country.
