Hormel Foods has issued a recall for two Planters products, peanuts, and mixed nuts, that were shipped to Dollar Tree and Publix warehouses in five states due to possible contamination with listeria. The products, produced at one of Hormel’s facilities in April, include 4-ounce packages of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts and 8.75-ounce cans of Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts. Listeria is a dangerous organism that can cause serious infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the young, elderly, or frail. Symptoms for healthy individuals may include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The recalled products were distributed to Dollar Tree distribution centers in Georgia and South Carolina, as well as Publix distribution warehouses in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. The Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts have a “Best if used by” date of April 11, 2025, with a package UPC code of 2900002097. The Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts have a “Best if used by” date of April 5, 2026, with a PPC code of 2900001621 on the side of the can. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to either discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased for an exchange. Hormel’s customer service can be contacted via email, chat, or phone for further assistance.

In a separate report, the USDA revealed that 96% of participants in a test kitchen failed to wash their hands properly. Proper handwashing is essential for preventing the spread of germs and bacteria, especially in food preparation environments. The USDA’s findings highlight the importance of thorough handwashing practices to ensure food safety and prevent contamination. Failure to wash hands properly can lead to the transmission of harmful pathogens, putting consumers at risk of foodborne illnesses.

Food safety is a critical concern for manufacturers and retailers to ensure the quality and integrity of their products. Contamination with pathogens such as listeria can have serious health consequences for consumers, particularly those with weakened immune systems. Companies like Hormel Foods take proactive measures to recall products that may be contaminated to protect the public from potential harm. Consumers are urged to be vigilant and follow recall notices to protect themselves and their families from potential health risks associated with contaminated products.

The recall of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts and Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety practices in the production and distribution of food products. Manufacturers must adhere to strict quality control measures to prevent contamination and ensure the safety of their products. Consumers also play a crucial role in maintaining food safety by following proper handling and preparation guidelines. By working together, industry stakeholders and consumers can help minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses and protect public health.
