Portsmouth have been promoted to the Championship after 12 years in exile, with a thrilling win over Barnsley seeing them crowned champions of League One with two games to spare. Pompey were relegated from the second tier back in 2012 under the cloud of administration. They suffered a successive relegation down to League Two the following season as their financial issues mounted, before the Pompey Supporters Trust led a fan-funded takeover to rescue the club. After four years in the fourth tier, Pompey were promoted as champions on the final day of the 2016/2017 season. They have reached the play-offs twice since that promotion and have now finally cracked the code to go up to the Championship. Boss John Mousinho replaced Danny Cowley midway through last season and has transformed the Blues into the best team in the third tier. They have lost just four games this season, winning 27, to be crowned champions with two games to go. The crucial points to secure promotion were won on Tuesday night as they scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to beat Barnsley. The visitors went ahead just six minutes in, but Australian star Kusini Yengi quickly equalised. John McAttee then scored just before the hour mark to put the celebrations on ice, but Colby Bishop converted a penalty with seven minutes to go to get the party back in full swing. And Fratton Park went wild when Conor Shaughnessy headed home a last-minute winner. Eight minutes of stoppage time followed, with stewards struggling to hold back the home fans. As soon as the referee blew the final whistle they flooded on to the pitch, lifting their heroes onto their shoulders as the party finally started.
