Pope Francis has accepted an invitation to attend the Group of 7 (G7) Summit in Puglia in June. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced this news, making Francis the first pontiff to attend a G7 summit. The summit, scheduled for June 13-15, will include leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States. Meloni stated that Francis would participate in a session focused on artificial intelligence, highlighting the importance of developing a regulatory, ethical, and cultural framework for AI.

Artificial intelligence has become a prominent topic worldwide, with systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT showcasing human-like abilities to produce text, photos, and songs. However, concerns have also been raised about the risks associated with advancing AI technology, including threats to jobs, privacy, copyright protection, and human life. In response to these concerns, Pope Francis has called for an international treaty to ensure that AI is developed and utilized in an ethical manner. His annual peace message this year was dedicated to discussing the ethical implications of AI.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life, a bioethics think tank, has been actively engaging with big tech corporations, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations to promote ethical standards in the development and use of AI. Recently, Cisco Systems became the latest signatory to pledge to uphold these standards. At a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting held in Capri, Italy, ministers acknowledged the risks to cybersecurity posed by AI and emphasized the importance of advancing efforts to ensure that AI is safe, secure, and trustworthy, with a focus on being human-centric and human rights-based.

The participation of Pope Francis in the G7 Summit will likely bring a unique perspective to the discussions around artificial intelligence and its ethical implications. His presence is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a regulatory framework for AI that prioritizes ethical considerations. By engaging with world leaders and technology stakeholders, Francis aims to shape the future of AI in a way that aligns with ethical principles and respects human dignity. The summit provides an opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in a collaborative and inclusive manner.

As technology continues to advance rapidly, the ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly important. Pope Francis’ advocacy for ethical development and use of AI reflects a broader call to ensure that technology serves the common good and upholds human rights. By engaging with global leaders and stakeholders, the Vatican aims to influence the trajectory of AI development in a way that prioritizes values such as dignity, justice, and solidarity. The upcoming G7 Summit in June will be a key platform for discussions on AI ethics, with Pope Francis leading the way in promoting a responsible approach to this transformative technology.
