A man suspected of aiding a plot by Russian intelligence services to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been arrested in Poland. The Polish national, identified only as Pawel K., is believed to have supplied information to Russian military intelligence and contributed to planning a possible assassination attempt against Zelensky. The suspect had expressed willingness to work on behalf of Russian military intelligence and had established contact with Russian citizens directly involved in the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian prosecutors had informed Poland of the suspect’s activities, which led to the gathering of crucial evidence against him.

The suspect was reportedly tasked with gathering and transmitting information about security at Rzeszow-Jasionka airport in southeastern Poland, where Zelensky frequently travels through on his trips abroad. The airport is also used by foreign officials and aid convoys heading to Ukraine. The suspect is currently in detention pending judicial procedures as the two countries’ prosecutors work together on the case. Ukrainian Chief Prosecutor Andriy Kostin emphasized the ongoing threat posed by Russia not only to Ukraine and Ukrainians but to the entire free world. He condemned the Kremlin’s criminal regime for organizing and carrying out sabotage operations in other sovereign states.

In response to the arrest, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski praised the work of his country’s special services and prosecutors, highlighting the collaboration with neighboring Ukraine in the operation. Warsaw has been a strong supporter of Kyiv since the Russian invasion in February 2022, although there has been recent tension between the two countries over a dispute regarding agricultural imports. The arrest of the suspect in connection to a plot against Zelensky underscores the ongoing threats posed by Russian intelligence services and the importance of international cooperation in addressing these security concerns.

The arrest serves as a reminder of the persistent danger posed by Russia’s aggressive actions in neighboring countries and the broader global community. Ukrainian Chief Prosecutor Kostin emphasized the need for vigilance against the Kremlin’s criminal regime’s disruptive activities, including sabotage operations in other sovereign states. The cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian prosecutors in apprehending the suspect demonstrates the commitment to addressing security threats and upholding the rule of law in the region. The case highlights the significance of international solidarity in combating threats to democracy and security posed by hostile foreign actors.

The case of the suspected plot to assassinate President Zelensky sheds light on the continued tensions in the region as a result of Russian aggression and interference in neighboring countries. The arrest of the suspect in Poland underscores the challenges posed by Russian intelligence services and the need for coordinated efforts to counter these threats. The ongoing cooperation between Poland and Ukraine in addressing security concerns highlights the importance of regional partnerships in maintaining stability and protecting against external threats. The arrest of the suspect sends a strong message that attempts to undermine the sovereignty and security of other nations will not be tolerated and that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
