PepsiCo recently issued a recall for Schweppes Zero Sugar Ginger Ale after discovering it actually contained sugar. The company has now issued a second recall, this time for over 2,000 cases of Mug Root Beer that were found to contain Mug Zero Sugar root beer instead. The recall began on March 22 and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced the investigation on Wednesday. The affected soda was sold in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, with a best by date of July 22, 2024.

Last week, the FDA announced another recall by PepsiCo, this time for more than 230 cases of ginger ale labeled as “Zero Sugar” but actually containing full sugar. This mistake could pose a safety risk for those who avoid sugar, such as diabetics. About 233 cases were recalled, amounting to an estimated 5,592 soda cans. The affected cans were shipped to Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This “Class II” recall, initiated on March 9, is still ongoing and applies to cases containing 7.5-fluid-ounce cans of ginger ale with a specific UPC code.

The recall of the Schweppes Zero Sugar Ginger Ale was due to an “internal investigation” revealing the mislabeling of the product. The incorrect labeling of the cans could have resulted in those purposely avoiding sugar unknowingly consuming it. The recall for Mug Root Beer was also a result of incorrect labeling, as Mug Zero Sugar root beer was mistakenly packaged inside the cans. Both recalls indicate errors in the packaging process that led to misleading information for consumers.

The issue with both the zero sugar ginger ale and the root beer containing zero sugar is a serious one, especially for those with dietary restrictions or health conditions that require them to monitor their sugar intake. Consuming sugar unknowingly could have detrimental effects on their health. PepsiCo’s voluntary recalls demonstrate their commitment to ensuring the safety and accuracy of their products for consumers. The FDA’s involvement in announcing the recalls and overseeing the investigations further reinforces the importance of proper labeling and accuracy in the food and beverage industry.

While the specific details of how the errors occurred in the labeling process are not provided, it is clear that PepsiCo is taking swift action to rectify the situation. By issuing voluntary recalls and notifying both consumers and the FDA, they are working to remove the affected products from the market and prevent any potential harm to consumers. It is essential for companies to maintain strict quality control measures to avoid such mistakes, as they can have serious consequences for both consumers and the brand’s reputation.

The recalls by PepsiCo for the Schweppes Zero Sugar Ginger Ale and Mug Root Beer highlight the importance of accurate labeling and quality control in the food and beverage industry. Ensuring that products are correctly labeled is crucial for consumers, especially those with specific dietary requirements or health conditions. The involvement of the FDA in overseeing these recalls demonstrates the regulatory oversight that exists to protect consumers from potentially harmful products. It is essential for companies to take responsibility for errors in their products and work quickly to rectify the situation to maintain trust with consumers and uphold their brand reputation.
