High drama and neighborhood squabbles are a common occurrence in HOA communities, and Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego County is no exception. In 2022, renowned developer and designer Steve Hermann purchased the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe for $43 million, a historic property that has been frequented by celebrities such as Bing Crosby and Charlie Chaplin. Just a year later, Hermann flipped the property for $100 million to a real estate investment company in Chicago. The relationship between Hermann and the Rancho Santa Fe covenant, which oversees the hotel’s preservation during its renovation, was described as “fraught” by a local resident.

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, which opened in 1924, recently underwent a multi-phase overhaul and has finally reemerged as a boutique hotel with 85 keys. Located in the heart of the village’s historic district, the inn is known for its glamorous latticework, excellent local cuisine at restaurant Lillian’s, and a new bar named Bing’s Bar where guests can enjoy a drink by the fire. Managed by Vikram Sood, the property has exciting plans in store for both locals and visitors who will be pleased with their experience at the inn. The renovation was overseen by interior design expert Nina Chiappa, incorporating vintage pieces, handcrafted furniture, and custom Murano crystal chandeliers sourced from Europe.

Each of the hotel’s cottages and bungalows is elegantly outfitted with Dyson hairdryers, Le Labo bath products, and Toto commodes for a luxurious experience. Many of the cottages also feature fireplaces and private patios where guests can relax and enjoy their stay. One of the final pieces of the renovation project was the opening of the Mila Moursi Spa in January, adding to the property’s amenities. Managing director Vikram Sood praised Hermann for leaving his mark on the inn with his attention to detail and dedication to creating a beautiful experience for guests.

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe has a long history as a retreat for the elite, with celebrities and locals alike enjoying its historic charm and luxurious amenities. The property’s location in the leafy historic district of the village adds to its appeal, providing a serene setting for guests to relax and unwind. With the recent renovation and updates to the property, there has never been a more exciting time to be a part of the inn’s history. The addition of the Mila Moursi Spa, along with the upscale accommodations and dining options, further enhance the guest experience and ensure that visitors will have a memorable stay at the prestigious inn.

Despite the neighborhood drama surrounding its purchase and renovation, the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe continues to be a sought-after destination for those seeking a luxurious and relaxing getaway. With its rich history, upscale accommodations, and attention to detail in design and amenities, the inn remains a beloved spot for travelers and locals alike. The lush surroundings, elegant decor, and high-end features throughout the property contribute to its appeal and make it a standout destination in the exclusive Rancho Santa Fe community. Guests can look forward to a unique and luxurious experience at the inn, with plenty of opportunities to relax, unwind, and enjoy the best that Southern California has to offer.
