On February 8th, during the third day of protests by farmers in various areas of Spain, nine farmers gathered outside an industrial warehouse of a horticultural company in El Ejido, Almería. With their faces covered, they set fire to several tires and a mattress inside the building and quickly fled the scene. A worker inside the warehouse managed to partially close the metal access door before smoke filled the interior. The Police later arrested the men responsible for the fire, which put the lives of 25 employees at risk. The suspects have been released on bail.

The incident occurred at 7:29 pm on February 8th, as seen on security cameras of the targeted company, which imports fruits and vegetables from Morocco. The group of farmers specifically targeted the company due to its importation practices. The attackers can be seen on the footage pouring gasoline on the floor and setting it on fire, causing intense flames and smoke to quickly fill the warehouse. The workers managed to escape through emergency exits, but one individual suffered injuries from inhaling smoke and had to be hospitalized. The fire caused damages worth 26,000 euros.

The police investigation, named Operation Phoenix, aimed to identify the perpetrators by tracing their participation in various protest forums related to the agricultural sector. The suspects did not know each other personally but were connected through online chats discussing the agricultural situation in Spain. The attackers gradually radicalized each other until they decided to set fire to the company due to its business ties with Morocco. Despite knowing that there were workers inside the building, the perpetrators carried out the attack, putting lives at risk.

The police were able to arrest the nine individuals on April 13th, charging them with aggravated arson. The suspects were later released on bail. The authorities emphasized that the attackers were fully aware of the presence of workers in the warehouse but proceeded with their plan regardless. The investigation highlighted the dangers posed by the fire due to the highly flammable materials stored inside the building. The quick response of the authorities prevented further harm and damages.

The incident sheds light on the tensions within the agricultural sector in Spain, particularly in regions like El Ejido. The actions of the nine individuals reflect the frustration and desperation of farmers facing challenges in the industry. The attack could have resulted in a tragedy, but fortunately, no lives were lost. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of peaceful and constructive dialogue to address grievances and work towards solutions in the agricultural sector. The authorities will continue to monitor and address any further incidents that may arise.
