A new national poll conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute shows that Republicans are significantly more enthusiastic about a potential rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election. The survey found that 63% of Republicans were very or somewhat enthusiastic about the potential matchup, in comparison to 36% of Democrats and 27% of independents. The overall enthusiasm for the Biden-Trump rematch has increased by 12 points over the past year, but still remains under 50% at 39%. This survey highlights a stark partisan divide in terms of enthusiasm for the upcoming election.

The poll also revealed that there is a close contest between Biden and Trump, with 44% of respondents indicating that they will likely support Trump, and 43% saying the same for Biden. Additionally, 49% said they would definitely not vote for Biden, and 48% said the same about Trump. Notably, 18% of respondents stated that they would consider voting for Democrat turned independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr, although this support was not particularly strong. The poll results suggest that Kennedy may only play a spoiler role in a very close election.

When asked about the most important issues in the presidential election, respondents cited inflation, economic growth and jobs, immigration, and abortion as the top concerns. For Republicans, immigration and inflation were the most important issues, while abortion was the key issue for Democrats. Poll director Patrick Murray noted that partisan voters were motivated by different issues that may impact their decision to vote. In this case, inflation emerged as a key issue that could sway voters in the upcoming election.

The survey was conducted from April 18-22 and involved 808 adults nationwide. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. Overall, the poll results indicate that the 2024 election between Biden and Trump is likely to be a close contest, with enthusiasm among Republicans significantly higher than among Democrats and independents. While support for alternative candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr was identified, their impact on the election may be minimal. Partisan voters are motivated by different issues, with inflation emerging as a key concern that could influence their voting decisions.
