In the Preston area of Cambridge, Ont., a unique gathering of wrestlers and fans took place in the basement of Knox Presbyterian Church, where wrestling matches were held. The wrestlers in attendance were pursuing various goals, from fulfilling childhood dreams to making it to the big leagues or traveling to exotic locations. The Cross Body Pro Wrestling Academy, founded by (Big) Ben Ortmanns about a decade ago, is the brainchild behind the wrestling matches held in the church basement, featured in the YouTube series Uproar. Ortmanns handles all aspects of the shows from booking to promoting and even steps into the ring for matches himself.

Among the wrestlers featured in the matches was Ahmed Alam, a Toronto native who shifted his career aspirations from becoming a doctor to pursuing wrestling. Alam embarked on his wrestling journey by attending Battle Arts Academy and eventually working his way into independent shows. He finds a sense of confidence and community in wrestling, forming friendships with like-minded individuals pursuing the same career path. Despite his parents’ hopes for him to become a doctor, Alam has found support in his wrestling career and continues to push himself to succeed.

Another wrestler in the lineup was Tyler Loveman, who discovered his passion for wrestling later in life while struggling through university. After a moment of realization in a physics class, he decided to pursue wrestling as a career, despite initial opposition from his parents. Loveman faced a setback due to a serious injury, but after taking time off for recovery, he was able to resume his wrestling career. His determination and perseverance allowed him to overcome challenges and continue pursuing his dream.

Laurel CassieD, the only woman wrestler on the card that night, shared her love for wrestling from a young age, leading her to pursue training at Cross Body Pro Wrestling Academy. Her persona as the Rainbow Brite wrestler was inspired by childhood nostalgia and has become a defining feature of her character. CassieD found success in holding tag team titles last year but was met with defeat in the match in March. Similarly, newcomer Alex Gagne made his debut in a high-profile match, showcasing his dedication to training and passion for wrestling. The thrill of performing in front of a live audience and the creativity involved in wrestling provide a unique and fulfilling outlet for Gagne.

For (Big) Ben Ortmanns, wrestling has been a lifelong passion that led him to establish Cross Body Pro Wrestling Academy with a focus on training aspiring wrestlers. From his early days training in Hamilton to later traveling the country for wrestling matches, Ortmanns has accumulated a wealth of experience in the industry. Despite never reaching the pinnacle of wrestling success himself, he has dedicated himself to helping others pursue their wrestling dreams through the academy. Ortmanns envisions a bright future for the school and the Uproar series, driven by his love for the sport and a desire to support the next generation of wrestlers.
