Childress-Diaz also criticized the use of bond and the issuance of $2,000 summons attached to the charges, calling it “a slap in the face” to many of her clients who are already struggling to make ends meet and who were left without money, transportation or housing after their arrests. The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas on Tuesday called the latest indictments “groundless” and urged Hicks to repair a “fundamentally flawed” process.Meanwhile, at least six of Childress-Diaz’s clients have been turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol and could face prosecution for illegal entry, she said. The rest were issued $2,000 personal recognizance bonds set by a magistrate with no connection to the case, she said, but because it is El Paso County’s policy to not allow for folks to be released to bondsmen from jail, they remain incarcerated.Childress-Diaz said that most of her clients were blinded by pepper balls fired by El Paso Police officers on the ground, as well as from aloft, on April 12. Her clients included young parents with their children and those with medical conditions and some clients received flash burns when pepper balls hit their feet.Republican critics of El Paso Police and county Judge David Barker, a Democrat, have alleged the state judge appears to have just made a political decision and that it could cost people’s lives.“Did the judge and the police department overstep their boundaries in trying to come in and arrest individuals?” El Paso City Council candidate Rosa Guerrero, a Republican, asked. “Is this the beginning of a new era of policing in small, border communities of dangerous criminals without the necessary safety measures?”There is no doubt that terrorism is increasing along the border. Those numbers are increasing and we aren’t doing anything to stop it,” said U.S. Customs and Border Protection Deputy Director Leon Rodriguez. “This shows us that President Biden and the Democrat-controlled Congress need to demand immediate changes to border security, or we will feel it all over the country regardless of party affiliation.”Rodriguez said a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol official screamed to every political reporter and news team along that sector using 5G radio to break through the fog of war, record everyone there, and shake away any other person wearing or considering to wear a mask in the vicinity. USCBP published the video on YouTube with picture-in-picture “Fool Us” that tried to put a face on the immigrants, in which Rodriguez said, “If you do not cooperate with forces of the U.S. government, we will conduct the war without defense.”
