Amit Soussana, an Israeli woman, has recently revealed details of the sexual assault and violence she endured during her 55 days in captivity following the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 7. Released in late November as part of a hostage exchange, Soussana spoke out about the horrifying events she experienced while in captivity, including being beaten, dragged into Gaza, and forced to perform sexual acts under the threat of a gun. Her testimony sheds light on the psychological and physical torment she endured at the hands of her captors across multiple locations in Gaza.

During her captivity, Soussana was held alone in a child’s bedroom, chained by her ankle, and subjected to sexual advances and violence by her guard. She recounted how her guard would enter the room, lift her shirt, and touch her. She also detailed a specific attack by her guard, who she identified as Muhammad, during which he held a pistol to her head, hit her, and sexually assaulted her in a bathtub. Soussana’s bravery in sharing her story has brought attention to the plight of hostages held by Hamas and the heinous acts of violence they endure.

Dr. Ayelet Levy Shachar, the mother of another hostage, Naama Levy, spoke out in support of Soussana and highlighted the ongoing physical, sexual, and psychological torture faced by hostages in Gaza. She emphasized the urgent need to bring these individuals, both women and men, back to safety before it is too late. The disturbing accounts shared by Soussana and other hostages highlight the urgent need for action to protect their lives and ensure their safe return to their families.

The United Nations had previously published a report indicating that rape and gang rape, along with other forms of sexual violence, likely occurred during the October 7 Hamas attack. The report revealed evidence of sexual assaults on hostages held in Gaza, emphasizing the ongoing threat faced by those currently in captivity. Hamas official Basem Naim has denied these allegations, but the testimonies of Soussana and others point to the severity of the situation and the urgent need for intervention to protect the hostages.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised Soussana for her courage in speaking out about the sexual crimes and abuse she endured. He emphasized that her testimony serves as a voice for all victims of Hamas’ actions and calls for justice for women everywhere. Soussana’s story sheds light on the importance of addressing the issue of sexual violence and abuse in conflict situations and advocating for the rights and safety of all individuals affected by such acts.
