Critics also made derogatory comments about Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, who is Black, insinuating that he was a diversity hire.

Mayor Scott responded to these attacks, stating that he understood the underlying racist sentiments and implications behind the use of “DEI” as a slur. He emphasized that Black men, especially young Black men, have historically been demonized by racists, and the term “DEI” was essentially meant to demean his position as an elected official.
