A Pennsylvania man has been hailed as a hero after rescuing two people from a burning building in Minersville. The fire, which occurred on North Second Street, destroyed at least four homes. Oscar Rivera, the brave neighbor who rescued the victims, risked his life while his children watched. Janeen Huth captured the harrowing scene on camera as thick black smoke billowed from the house. Rivera pulled an elderly man to safety through an attic window on the roof as a woman could be seen on the neighboring house’s roof. The man was later flown to the hospital, with his condition remaining unknown.
Rivera, 48, recounted that he had been playing with his children in the backyard when his wife alerted him to the fire across the street. The woman on the roof was struggling to save the man and called for assistance as smoke poured out of the home. Rivera, along with a neighbor, sprang into action. Using a ladder, Rivera climbed onto the roof of the burning house and then used the eave of a neighboring house to reach the third floor. Despite the growing flames and thick smoke, Rivera managed to pull the elderly man to safety. He had to contend with burning insulation falling on his back as he rescued the man from the window and dragged him to safety on the ledge.
Minersville Mayor Sean Palmer publicly praised Rivera for his bravery, highlighting that he was the first civilian on the scene and managed to extract the man and woman from the burning building. Palmer also commended two volunteer firefighters, Fire Chief Mike Melochick and Luke Heffron, for their efforts in getting Rivera and the residents down from the roof. Both firefighters suffered severe smoke inhalation but are fortunately okay after receiving treatment at the ER. The cause of the fire, which resulted in significant property damage, is currently under investigation by State Police Fire Marshal Joseph Hall. The American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania chapter provided assistance to the 19 individuals who were displaced by the fire, including 15 adults and four children, and offered refreshments to the first responders.
