Investigators have conducted searches at the offices of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Lower Saxony following allegations that a state parliament member violated party laws. It is suspected that donation funds were not promptly forwarded, and expenses were not properly reported in the party’s financial disclosures. The AfD denies these allegations. The searches were in relation to an individual state parliament member, whose identity has not been disclosed, as well as the lifting of immunity for two other AfD lawmakers by the Lower Saxony state parliament.

The searches targeted the state and district branches of the AfD in Hannover, with no search conducted in the lawmakers’ offices. According to reports by the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung,” the “Neue Presse,” and NDR, the searches were conducted on Wednesday morning. Frank Rinck, the party’s state chairman, rejected the allegations against the state parliament member. Previously, investigations by two public prosecutors had been discontinued. Rinck stated that the accusations were directed at his deputy in the state association, Ansgar Schledde, who did not provide a statement in response. Rinck emphasized that the party is committed to a swift investigation and has pledged full cooperation and transparency to the public prosecutor’s office.

Rinck criticized the timing of the searches, which coincided with an upcoming AfD state party conference and the impending European elections. He suggested that these events indicated a potential smear campaign against the AfD in Lower Saxony. Rinck accused the judiciary of being used against the opposition and vowed to defend against such tactics using all legal means available. The party leader labeled the searches as “completely disproportionate” and stressed the importance of addressing any concerns promptly. The AfD in Lower Saxony is determined to navigate these legal challenges with integrity and uphold the principles of the rule of law.

The suspicion of the state parliament member’s misconduct revolves around allegedly mishandled donation funds and unreported party expenses, potentially violating the provisions outlined in Section 31d of the party law. This specific violation carries penalties of up to three years of imprisonment or a monetary fine. The state prosecutor’s office in Hannover clarified that the searches were solely focused on one lawmaker and targeted financial irregularities within the party’s operations. Despite the ongoing investigations and media attention, the AfD remains steadfast in its commitment to defending its members and preserving the party’s integrity amidst these legal challenges.

The recent searches at the AfD offices in Lower Saxony underscore the complex relationship between political parties and legal compliance in Germany. The allegations of violating party laws highlight the importance of transparency and accountability within political organizations. The accusations against the state parliament member have further fueled tensions between the AfD and government authorities, raising questions about the motivations behind the investigations and their potential impact on the party’s reputation. As the legal proceedings unfold, the AfD faces a critical juncture in navigating the intersection of law and politics in Germany, underscoring the ongoing challenges of maintaining public trust in the democratic process.
