Google is now expanding its Gemini app to older Android devices running Android 10 and Android 11. Initially, the app was only available for devices running Android 12 and up. However, the latest version of Gemini for Android can now be installed via the Play Store for older devices, as confirmed by tests conducted by various sources.

The expansion of the Gemini app to older Android versions is significant as Android 10 and 11 still make up a significant portion of the global Android install base. This move allows millions of devices to access Google’s latest AI technology, offering a functional experience similar to newer handsets. Additionally, this development could benefit users of older Pixel phones and other Android devices, potentially opening up the door to more AI-powered features in the future.

Both Google and Samsung have surprised users by rolling out AI tools to older phones. Samsung recently announced AI features like Live Translate, Circle to Search, Note Assist, and generative image editing for its Galaxy S23 range, previously exclusive to the Galaxy S24. Similarly, Google has a history of updating older devices with new features through its Feature Drop program, hinting at future developments in the “Gemini Era” proclaimed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai earlier this year.

While Google has not officially confirmed the Gemini update, speculations suggest that more announcements may be made at next month’s I/O Conference. The rollout of advanced AI technology to older devices reflects a trend in the tech industry towards making cutting-edge features accessible to a wider range of users, pushing the boundaries of innovation and functionality in the Android ecosystem. It will be interesting to see how Google continues to enhance Gemini and related tools for devices across the Android universe in the future.
