The Georgia Appeals Court has agreed to hear Donald Trump’s request to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from his criminal election interference case. This decision comes after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee refused to remove Willis from the case despite the revelation that she was in a romantic relationship with a member of her legal team. Trump is facing charges of illegal attempts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in Georgia’s 2020 election, although no trial date has been set yet. Trump’s attorney, Steve Sadow, stated that the former president is eager to explain to the appeals court why the case should be dismissed and why Willis should be disqualified due to her alleged misconduct in what he calls a politically motivated persecution.
The Georgia Court of Appeals taking up Trump’s bid to disqualify his prosecutor is seen as a setback for Willis’ case against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Special prosecutor Nathan Wade recently stepped down from the prosecution after McAfee determined that either he or the D.A. must remove themselves from the case.
