Actor Matthew Underwood, known for his role in “Zoey 101,” revealed that he was sexually harassed and assaulted by his former agent at the age of 19. He shared this information on Instagram in response to criticism for remaining silent after the release of the “Quiet on Set” documentary, which exposed alarming allegations against employees of the Nickelodeon network. Underwood reported his agent to the agency, leading to his termination, but he remains active in the industry. This traumatic experience prompted Underwood to leave Los Angeles and end his pursuit of acting.

Despite receiving negative emails accusing him of being a “pedophile defender” for not speaking out earlier, Underwood explained that he had personal reasons for staying silent. He expressed concern that his friends in the industry may also be facing harassment. Additionally, he disclosed that he had been allegedly “groomed and molested” by his best friend’s stepfather when he was only 12 years old. However, Underwood clarified that he never had a negative experience during his time at Nickelodeon and while working with “Zoey 101” creator Dan Schneider, whom he believes has the potential to be a better person.

In response to the allegations made against Schneider in the “Quiet on the Set” documentary, several former Nickelodeon stars spoke out about the toxic work environment fostered by the producer. Schneider was accused of tormenting and humiliating the cast and crew on his TV sets. Former Nickelodeon writer Amy Berg referred to him as a “psychological tormenter.” Schneider denied the allegations but acknowledged that he had been inconsiderate in the past and owed people a sincere apology. Despite the controversies surrounding him, Underwood believes in the capacity of individuals to improve and hopes for a positive change in Schneider’s behavior.

Amidst the allegations against Schneider, former “Drake and Josh” star Drake Bell sued dialogue coach Brian Peck in 2004 for sexual abuse, however, he chose to remain anonymous in the lawsuit. Peck pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to 16 months in prison. These instances highlight the prevalence of sexual misconduct and abuse in the entertainment industry. Underwood’s decision to speak out about his own experiences sheds light on the challenges faced by actors and the importance of creating a safe and supportive work environment. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for accountability and change within the industry to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

By sharing his story, Underwood hopes to raise awareness about the complex reasons why some individuals may choose to remain silent about their experiences of harassment and abuse. He recognizes the impact of speaking out against powerful figures within the industry and the personal toll it can take on survivors. Despite the difficulties he has faced, Underwood remains optimistic about the potential for growth and transformation, both for himself and for those who have been accused of wrongdoing. As conversations surrounding sexual misconduct in Hollywood continue to evolve, it is essential to support survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and work towards creating a culture of respect and safety for all individuals in the industry.
