Warren’s decision to seek reelection comes after initially stating he would not run this year, following his suspension from office by Governor DeSantis over statements regarding hot-button issues like abortion. The federal appeals court ruled that Warren’s statements were protected by the First Amendment, prompting his decision to run for a third term. The court battle over Warren’s removal from office is ongoing, with the case pending as a judge in Tallahassee considers whether to reinstate him.

In his announcement, Warren emphasized his commitment to protecting values such as a woman’s right to choose, a fair and just legal system, and freedom and democracy. He accused the governor of illegally forcing him from office, leading to his decision to seek reelection. Warren’s opponent in the election is Suzy Lopez, who was appointed by Governor DeSantis to replace him as the prosecutor for Tampa and surrounding Hillsborough County.

Governor DeSantis’s office expressed concerns over the 11th U.S. Circuit Court’s ruling in favor of Warren, stating that it could set a dangerous precedent by allowing politically motivated prosecutors to ignore laws they oppose. The appeal will be reviewed by U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle, who previously ruled in favor of Warren but stated he lacked the authority to reinstate him. The appeals court disagreed, asserting that Hinkle does have the authority to reinstate Warren if deemed appropriate.

Warren’s suspension by Governor DeSantis was the first instance of a Democratic elected state attorney being removed by the Republican governor. Last year, DeSantis also suspended Monique Worrell, who was the state attorney for the Orlando area. Worrell is challenging the decision before the Florida Supreme Court, raising questions about the governor’s actions regarding Democratic prosecutors.

Despite the ongoing legal battle and uncertainty surrounding his reinstatement, Warren remains determined to uphold his values and principles as he seeks reelection. His decision to run for a third term reflects his commitment to fighting for what he believes is right, including advocating for a woman’s right to choose and ensuring a fair and just legal system. The outcome of the court battle and the upcoming election will be crucial in determining the future of the prosecutor’s office in Tampa and Hillsborough County.
