The highly-anticipated Freaky Friday sequel is officially in the works, with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis set to reprise their roles as mother and daughter. The idea for the sequel came about as people expressed interest in another installment while Curtis was promoting Halloween Ends. The first Freaky Friday premiered in 2003, with Lohan playing the role of teenage Anna and Curtis playing her mom, Tess. Curtis described Lohan as “fluid” on set, praising her acting abilities, while Lohan remembered Curtis taking her under her wing and helping her through nerve-wracking moments on set.

Before the official confirmation of the sequel, Curtis had been advocating for a new movie and suggested a storyline where she would play the grandmother while Lohan portrayed a grandmother in a different role. The sequel, tentatively titled Freaky Friday 2, will see Lohan and Curtis returning to reprise their roles. Nisha Ganatra will direct the film, taking over from original director Mark Waters, while Jordan Weiss has written the script. The plot of the sequel involves Lohan’s character, Anna, now having a snarky 14-year-old daughter named Harper, who is adjusting to her mother’s upcoming marriage to a British restauranteur.

In addition to Lohan and Curtis, the sequel may also see the return of Pink Slip, the band that Lohan’s character Anna was a part of in the first film. The band members include Christina Vidal as Maddie and Haley Hudson as Peg, and the band was known for hit songs like “Ultimate” and “Take Me Away.” Producer Andrew Gunn hinted at the possibility of the band reuniting for the sequel and praised the script they received before the writers’ strike. Lohan confirmed the sequel during a radio appearance in March 2024, expressing excitement for the project without revealing too many details.

The original Freaky Friday film was a hit, with Lohan and Curtis’s performances receiving acclaim. Curtis, in particular, shared fond memories of working with Lohan on set, praising her acting skills and the ease of their relationship. Lohan also spoke highly of Curtis, remembering her mentorship and support throughout the production. The chemistry between the two actresses was evident on screen, and fans are eager to see them reprise their iconic roles in the sequel. The success of the original film and the continued interest in the franchise have generated excitement and anticipation for the upcoming sequel.
