The Coldiretti organization estimates that the average Italian family will spend around 75 euros on Easter lunch in 2024, which is similar to the previous year. This cost is based on a table of six people, with most Italians choosing to celebrate Easter at home or with relatives and friends. According to a Coldiretti/Ixè survey, 60% of Italians will enjoy their Easter meal at home, while another 26% will gather at the homes of loved ones. Additionally, 9% will opt to dine out at a restaurant or agriturismo, 3% will have a picnic outdoors, and 2% will celebrate elsewhere.

On average, it will take families 2.1 hours to prepare their Easter meal, with a strong preference for traditional menus. The survey reveals that 55% of those cooking will spend between 30 minutes and 2 hours in the kitchen, while 26% will cook for 3 hours, 11% for 5 hours, and 5% even longer. Only 3% will spend just half an hour preparing the meal. The most iconic Easter food for Italians is lamb, featured on one out of every three tables during the holiday. Additionally, Easter eggs are a popular choice, with around 300,000 consumed during Holy Week.

Colombe (dove-shaped cakes) and chocolate eggs remain the favorite desserts for Italians on Easter, with 69% preferring colombe and 63% favoring chocolate eggs. However, there is a growing interest in regional traditional sweets. The survey shows that more than 40% of families will prepare regional Easter desserts at home this year, emphasizing a return to the ancient recipes passed down through the generations. The resurgence of these traditional recipes reflects a renewed appreciation for Italy’s culinary heritage.

The research findings were presented at the first exhibition of regional Easter specialties at Campagna Amica Market at Circo Massimo in Rome. At the event, farmers-turned-chefs shared their expertise and taught citizens and tourists alike how to prepare delicious dishes from the countryside. This initiative aimed to promote traditional Easter foods and highlight the rich culinary traditions of Italy. By showcasing these regional specialties, the event celebrated the diversity and authenticity of Italian cuisine, encouraging people to embrace and cherish their cultural heritage.

Overall, the Easter 2024 celebrations in Italy are expected to be a time of gathering, feasting, and honoring culinary traditions. With families spending an average of 75 euros on the holiday meal and cooking for 2.1 hours, there is a clear preference for traditional Easter dishes such as lamb, Easter eggs, colombe, and chocolate. The survey results indicate a growing interest in regional Easter desserts, with more families choosing to make traditional sweets at home. By showcasing these regional specialties at the Campagna Amica Market, the research aimed to promote Italian culinary heritage and preserve the authenticity of Easter traditions.
