Former President Donald Trump has called for Special Counsel Jack Smith to be arrested after evidence in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case was found to be not in their original form. Trump made a post on Truth Social demanding Smith’s arrest, alleging that the prosecutor had tampered with evidence. Federal prosecutors acknowledged in court filings that some items in the boxes retrieved from Trump’s Florida resort in August 2022 were not in the same order as in digital scans, leading to concerns about evidence integrity.

In response to a request from one of Trump’s co-defendants for a delay in the trial, Smith’s office admitted inconsistencies in the handling of the classified documents, stating that items such as index cards and books may have shifted in the boxes during transport. Despite this, Smith’s team maintained that the location of the materials within the boxes does not impact the criminal case and does not warrant a delay in proceedings. The trial date for the case involving Trump, his co-defendants, and the classified materials has not yet been finalized.

Trump further accused Smith of evidence tampering and called for the case to be dismissed, claiming it was an “Election Interference Scam” orchestrated by President Joe Biden and Smith. The former president argued that the handling of the boxes containing the documents was illegal and demanded an immediate end to the investigation. Trump faces 40 charges related to allegations that he retained classified materials after leaving office and obstructed attempts by federal authorities to retrieve them.

Nauta and De Oliveira, Trump’s co-defendants, have also pleaded not guilty to obstruction charges in connection with the handling of the sensitive materials at Mar-a-Lago. They are accused of moving boxes of documents around the resort to prevent them from being found by the FBI, as well as conspiring to delete security footage. The case has been marred by disputes over the handling of evidence and calls for the trial to be postponed due to issues with the organization of the documents retrieved from Mar-a-Lago.

The accusations of evidence tampering and mishandling of the classified materials have sparked a contentious legal battle between Trump and the Special Counsel’s office. Trump has been vocal in his criticism of the investigation, alleging political motives behind the case and demanding swift action to end what he refers to as a “Witch Hunt.” The case continues to unfold as both sides present their arguments in court and strive to establish the integrity of the evidence and the fairness of the legal proceedings. The outcome of the trial and the resolution of the disputes surrounding the classified documents remain uncertain as the legal process unfolds.
