Security has been significantly strengthened in Paris for the match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and FC Barcelona Wednesday night at Parc des Princes, after the Islamic State (IS) made a “specific threat” against the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, announced Gérald Darmanin on Tuesday, April 9. “The police prefecture, with which I spoke very early [Tuesday] morning, has significantly reinforced security measures,” said the interior minister, citing a “specific threat publicly stated by the Islamic State.” The General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) “is particularly active to meet the needs of preventive or, if necessary, curative intelligence,” he added. Darmanin spoke in Paris during a visit to the river brigade of the police prefecture, which will be involved in securing the opening ceremony on the Seine of the Paris Olympic Games (July 26-August 11).

“The IS has threatened the Champions League quarter-finals, not specifically in France, through one of its communication agencies,” a source close to the matter told Agence France-Presse. On Tuesday night, Arsenal will face Bayern Munich in London, and Real Madrid will host Manchester City in the Spanish capital. Wednesday night, it will be PSG’s turn to host FC Barcelona at Parc des Princes, and Atlético Madrid to receive Dortmund. “I have asked (…) the director general of internal security to pass on the information we have to the services of other countries hosting the quarter-finals,” added Darmanin. The IS “is responsible for the last eight attacks that France has experienced,” he emphasized, while calling not to “fall into what terrorist propaganda is trying to do, which is to instill fear.”
