The Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who brought forth the election interference case against former President Trump, faced controversy when she was accused of having an improper relationship with the special counsel she hired, Nathan Wade. A judge ordered Willis to either remove herself from the case or fire Wade, who ultimately chose to resign. Willis’ political opponent debated an empty podium after she skipped the county’s first Democratic Party debate, with him criticizing her decision to hire a romantic partner for the high-level case. Despite her absence at the debate, Willis is still focusing on the continued prosecution of Trump. Willis and her opponent will face off in the Democratic primary on May 28, with the winner competing against a Republican challenger on Nov. 5. Local polling shows Willis leading over her opponent despite the controversy surrounding the Trump case.

Willis and Wade both admitted to their affair during testimony on the matter, but claimed it only became official in 2022, after charges were brought against the defendants in the Trump case. However, witnesses alleged the relationship began before 2022. Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee acknowledged a significant appearance of impropriety in the prosecution team but did not find an actual conflict of interest in the case due to their personal relationship. McAfee ruled that Willis should step aside from the case or fire Wade, who resigned last month. Willis has defended herself by stating that she is the only district attorney with the courage to prosecute Trump and has claimed that when a case lands in her jurisdiction, she will prosecute it.

Eric Trump warned that Willis and her counterpart, Bragg, want to torture his father but stated that no one is believing these claims. Willis was absent from the debate event, choosing to co-host a “Self Care Fair” in honor of Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Her opponent criticized her decision to pay one attorney nearly $1 million to handle one case, leaving others vulnerable. Despite criticisms about her handling of the case and the controversy surrounding her relationship with Wade, Willis remains focused on prosecuting Trump. The case has been branded by Trump as a “witch hunt” led by a compromised district attorney. Willis’ opponent has called for her to do things differently, although local polling has shown her with a strong lead over her opponent. Willis and her opponent will face off in the Democratic primary on May 28, with the winner advancing to compete against a Republican challenger on Nov. 5.
