Forecasters are warning of a significant tornado outbreak in the central United States that could impact millions of people from Texas to the Dakotas. The National Weather Service has issued a “high risk” warning for portions of Oklahoma and Kansas, with the potential for multiple strong, long-tracked tornadoes, large hail, and severe thunderstorm gusts. This outbreak follows a deadly tornado outbreak in Oklahoma the previous week. A high risk warning is the highest-tier hazardous weather forecast that the Storm Prediction Center issues, with only one or two being issued each year on average.

The severe weather outbreak is expected to occur over parts of the south-central Plains from the afternoon through the evening, with the potential for large hail, tornadoes, and damaging winds. A strong and strengthening low-pressure system over portions of Colorado and the High Plains is contributing to the severe weather conditions. Schools in the danger zone, such as Oklahoma City Public Schools and metro-area school districts, have begun canceling after-school and evening activities in preparation for the storms. McConnell Air Force Base near Wichita, Kansas, is also relocating aircraft to ensure their safety.

This forecast is the first high-risk warning issued since two were issued in March 2023. The Storm Prediction Center believes this outbreak will be significant, with the potential for long-track, intense tornadoes. The high risk area for severe weather is centered on Oklahoma and Kansas, with the Oklahoma City metro area included in the warning. The severity of the forecast has prompted preparations and precautions to be taken by communities and organizations in the affected regions.

The Storm Prediction Center anticipates a serious severe weather outbreak, with strong storms and tornadoes expected. The potential for large hail, tornadoes, and damaging winds poses a threat to residents in the central U.S. and highlights the need for vigilance and preparedness. Forecasters are urging people in the impacted areas to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and seek shelter as needed. The outbreak is expected to bring dangerous conditions that could result in significant damage and loss of life if precautions are not taken.
