The recent NFL draft in Detroit made history with the Denver Broncos selecting Oregon quarterback Bo Nix as the sixth QB in the first round, the lowest number of signal-callers taken in the first round in NFL Draft history. Nix joins a crowded quarterback room in Denver including Jarrett Stidham, Ben DiNucci, and Zach Wilson, who was recently acquired from the New York Jets. Head coach Sean Payton will have to decide how much of a quarterback battle will take place among these players. The Falcons also made a surprising move by selecting Michael Penix Jr., after signing Kirk Cousins, who is expected to be the starting QB.

The Broncos were not initially planning on selecting a quarterback in this year’s draft after trading for Russell Wilson two seasons ago, but that plan changed when they released Wilson. Nix will have to prove himself as the quarterback of the future in his first year with the team, or he may need time to develop in Payton’s system. Nix started his collegiate career at Auburn before transferring to Oregon in 2022, where he had a breakout season in 2023 with 4,509 yards, 45 touchdowns, and a 77.4% completion rate. The Broncos hope Nix can continue playing at this level and will have weapons like Courtland Sutton and Josh Reynolds to work with.

Before Nix can establish connections with his new teammates, he will need to win the quarterback competition in Denver. The team may also bring in more offensive firepower through later draft picks. This will be an exciting position battle to watch as the Broncos prepare for the upcoming season. Stay updated on the latest sports news and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
