A recent revelation has shown that Albanian criminals convicted in the UK are being sent back to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home country, where the prisons offer unique perks. For example, those transferred can enjoy conjugal visits with their spouses for up to four hours a month, something that is not allowed in the UK. Additionally, prisoners can receive weekly food and clothing parcels from their families and even have personal cooking facilities. Some prisoners may even receive softer sentences when transferred back to Albania, potentially serving less time than if they had stayed in the UK. This arrangement is part of a scheme to repatriate dangerous criminals to their home countries.

One such criminal repatriated under this scheme is Erald Mema, a drug kingpin who was recently moved to a jail in the Albanian capital of Tirana. Mema, 39, had been sentenced to 25 years for running a large cocaine operation in the UK. He is among scores of Albanian nationals who have been given the option to transfer to facilities back home. While around 12 murderers, eight rapists, and more than 100 individuals guilty of drug or firearm offenses are expected to be returned to serve their remaining sentences, some will serve less time than they would in the UK due to adjustments based on Albania’s justice system.

The UK Government announced this agreement as a way to ensure that foreign criminals serve their sentences overseas rather than in UK prisons, thereby saving costs for UK taxpayers. The Justice Secretary highlighted the importance of ensuring that serious criminals face justice and that victims have confidence in the legal system. Once deported, foreign nationals serve their time under the rules and custody of their home state, in this case, Albania. This scheme allows for the removal of offenders from UK prisons, freeing up space for other inmates. The repatriation of these criminals is part of ongoing efforts by the UK government to streamline the justice system and ensure that justice is served.
