Kingston, Ontario native Aaliyah Edwards has made history by becoming the first-ever Kingstonian to be selected in the WNBA Draft. The University of Connecticut Senior was drafted 6th overall by the Washington Mystics, marking a significant milestone in her basketball career. Edwards had a standout season in 2023-24, averaging 17.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game for the UConn Huskies. She played a key role in helping the team reach the Final Four in three out of her four seasons, including a national championship game appearance in 2022.

During her time at UConn, Edwards received multiple accolades and honors for her performance on the court. In the 2023-24 season alone, she was named to the Big East first team, USBWA Second Team All-America, WCBA All-America, Wooden Award All-America, AP All-America honorable mention, and NCAA Tournament Regional All-Tournament Team. Her impressive skill set and leadership qualities have made her a standout player in the NCAA and a top prospect for the WNBA.

In addition to her WNBA draft selection, Edwards will also represent Team Canada at the Paris Olympics this summer. This will be her second time competing for the senior national team on the Olympic stage, showcasing her talent and dedication to the sport on an international level. Joining the Mystics for the upcoming WNBA season, Edwards will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the team and contribute to their success on the court.

The Washington Mystics, who finished 7th in the league last season with a record of 19-21, are looking to strengthen their roster with the addition of Edwards. While they will be without veteran forward Elena Delle Donne, who is taking a year away from the league due to injury, Edwards brings a fresh perspective and new energy to the team. The Mystics’ first game of the season is scheduled for May 14th against the New York Liberty, where Edwards will have the chance to showcase her skills in the professional basketball league.

As Edwards prepares to embark on her WNBA career with the Washington Mystics, she brings with her a wealth of experience and accolades from her time at UConn. Her remarkable journey from Kingston to the WNBA Draft is a testament to her hard work, determination, and talent on the basketball court. By representing both Canada and the Mystics, Edwards is poised to make a significant impact in the world of women’s basketball and continue to inspire young athletes following in her footsteps.
